Milano's: The Grandma Pie That Anchors Aventura's Kosher Row
A Grandma slice comes out of the pan at half past one on a weekday, and the first thing you notice is how thin it is. Not thin like a Neapolitan pie collapsing under its own moisture, but thin like a sheet pan pushed to its limit, crisp underneath, fresh mozzarella still in loose islands rather than a welded sheet, garlic visible in the tomato. Around you the room is doing the thing suburban lunch rooms do at that hour: a table of four in from the office park, a mother with two children who came for pizza and are being talked into a salad, a takeout bag going out the door. This is the 19000 block of NE 29th Avenue in Aventura, where four certified kosher storefronts sit almost shoulder to shoulder. Milano's has held the far end of it since November 2021.
The pizza is the argument, and the Grandma is the pie that makes it. Extra thin crust, baked in a pan, layered with fresh mozzarella and spotted with garlic under San Marzano crushed plum tomato sauce, then finished with parmigiana and a whisper of extra virgin olive oil. It is a New York pan pizza in the strict sense, and it is the only pie on the card the kitchen bothers to describe in that much detail on its own menu, which tells you where its pride sits. Next to it the Neopolitan is the plain thin crust test, mozzarella and tomato sauce and nothing to hide behind, and the Sicilian is the thick crust pan version for anyone who came for the bread as much as the cheese. All three are sold by the slice as well, from 3.75 up, with a rotating specialty slice for anyone who wants the kitchen to choose.
